Taghazout surf spots and seasons

When to come

Taghazout's main surf season runs from October to April, when North Atlantic storms send steady swell to the Moroccan coast. From May to September the waves are smaller, the lineups emptier and the water warmer, which suits beginners.

Never surfed? Any month works. Standing up in whitewater? Best from September to May. Riding green waves alone? October to April.

Month by month

• October: the season opens. Thin crowds, steady swell. Air 24°C, water 21°C.
• November to January: peak season. Big swells, fuller lineups. Air 20–22°C, water 18°C. 3/2 mm wetsuit.
• February and March: the sweet spot. The surf is still strong, with fewer people. Air 22–24°C, water 17–19°C.
• April: shoulder season. Leftover winter swell and warming water.
• May and June: quieter, with smaller waves that suit beginners. Air 24°C, water 19°C.
• July and August: the smallest waves of the year. Boardshort weather. Air 28°C, water 22°C.
• September: the swell starts coming back, and the water is still warm.

The spots

We surf nine breaks within an hour's drive. Which one suits you depends on your level, the swell, the wind and the tide. Picking it is your guide's job.

For beginners

• Panorama / Crocodiles: long, slow waves over sand. Good first waves.
• Banana Beach: a beach break with predictable waves on smaller days.

For intermediates

• Hash Point: a friendly right-hander in the village. Good for working on turns.
• Mysteries: a right-hand point break that peels, for longer rides.

For experienced surfers

• Anchor Point: a fast right-hand point break. Crowded and demanding.
• Killer Point: heavy and hollow, only on bigger swell.

What to bring

Your wetsuit is included. Boards come with the coached weeks, from soft tops to shortboards. On a guiding week, bring your own or rent one from €10 a day. Pack sunscreen, a rash vest and a warm layer for the evenings.
